Orthokeratology (OrthoK)

View Video

The OrthoK contact lens on the left is even smaller than the standard soft contact lens on the right in the first picture! OrthoK lenses are made from a more breathable and stiffer material called a gas permeable contact lens.

Orthokeratology, also known as OrthoK or gentle vision shaping is a non-surgical alternative to vision correction which enables patients to go all day without glasses, contacts and does not involve surgery. OrthoK medical devices resemble contact lenses and are inserted in the eye just before you go to sleep, and after 8 hours of sleep are removed. Most people experience 20/20 vision the entire day, right up until bedtime. Multiple controlled studies now show that orthoK may help to control the worsening nearsighted vision change some people experience annually. Orthokeratology is FDA approved and safe for children of all ages. OrthoK is great for athletes, especially swimmers and bikers, and is great for children because of it’s ease of use and myopia-controlling effect. No more losing lenses or glasses during the day! Also, OrthoK can be a great option if you are not a candidate for LASIK.
